| Kenyan President Meets with Yang Jiechi |

On January 6, 2010, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Nairobi, capital of Kenya. Kibaki said both peoples enjoy profound friendship and the pragmatic cooperation in all areas has been deepening. As the biggest development partner of Kenya, China has actively participated in Kenya’s infrastructure construction and offered enormous disinterested assistance for roads and other infrastructure projects in Kenya. The Kenyan government and people highly appreciated and thanked for China’s assistance, as it not only benefited the Kenyan people, but was also conducive to East Africa’s development, he said. Kenya is ready to work with China to further advance bilateral friendly cooperative relations. Kibaki emphasized that Kenya firmly adheres to the one-China policy. Yang said that since the establishment of China-Kenya friendly cooperative relations featuring long-term stability and mutual benefit in 2006, bilateral relations as well as cooperation in all areas have entered a new phase of all-round, in-depth and rapid development. Both sides have built up political trust, supported each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and coordinated closely in international affairs. Economic and trade cooperation has been diversified and both sides have conducted fruitful cooperation in transport, culture, education, science and technology and tourism. He said China cherishes the traditional friendship with Kenya and attaches importance to developing ties with Kenya. China is ready to work with Kenya to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen personnel contacts and further enhance pragmatic cooperation in infrastructure and other areas so as to push bilateral ties to a new level. On the same day, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga met with Yang Jiechi. The Chinese foreign minister also held talks with Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetang'ula. Both sides signed cooperation documents between the two countries and jointly met the press. |
