Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang's Comment on the Content Involving China in 2006 International Religious Freedom Report of US State Department

2006-09-19

Q: Recently, the US State Department released "2006 International Religious Freedom Report". It continues to accuse China of its religious policies and its situations of religious freedom. What comment do you have?

A: The part on China in the so-called "2006 International Religious Freedom Report" released by the US State Department continues groundless accusations against China of its religious and ethnic policies, and thus violates the basic norms governing international relations and interferes in China's internal affairs. We express strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to it.

The Chinese Government protects its citizens' freedom of religious belief in accordance with law. All ethnic groups and the people in all regions in China enjoy full freedom of religious belief in accordance with law. It is a fact which tolerates no distortion.

We urge the US to change its course and face up to its own problems including religious freedom and stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of religious issues.
