CNN Apologizes to the Chinese People for Its Commentator's Offensive Remarks

2008-05-16

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang says today that CNN Commentator Cafferty's offensive remarks against China stand on the opposite side of journalist ethics and human conscience, and has aroused strong indignation and condemnation by the Chinese people at home and abroad. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in the US have made solemn representations to CNN on many occasions, requesting it to apologize to the Chinese people.

In recent days, CNN President wrote a letter to the Chinese Ambassador in the US, apologizing to the Chinese people on behalf of CNN. The letter says, "CNN has the highest respect for the Chinese people around the world and we have no doubt that there was genuine offence felt by them over the Jack Cafferty commentary. On behalf of CNN, I'd like to apologize to the Chinese people for that."

We hope that CNN and Cafferty will learn lessons, respect the journalist ethnics and avoid such things from happening again. We hope that CNN will have comprehensive, objective and fair coverage on China and China-US relations, and contribute to the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and the healthy development of China-US relations.
