CRI: China Supports African Representation in UNSC

A senior Foreign Ministry official says China will continue to support representation of African countries on the United Nations Security Council regardless of whether the proposed UN reforms are implemented.
Xu Jinghu, head of the Foreign Ministry's Department for African Affairs made the remarks at the fourth Senior Officials Meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation which closed on Aug 23 (Tuesday) in Beijing.
The official said China is committed to comprehensive reforms to the world body, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals.
She said China understands Africa's political demands and hopes the two sides can hold further consultations on the UN reforms.
A meeting of the UN General Assembly, slated for September 14 in New York will decide whether to expand the UN Security Council. Members are deeply divided over a proposal by the so-called G4 which comprises Brazil, Germany, India and Japan, for six permanent new members - one seat each for the G4 and two for Africa.
