Chinese Medical Team in Tanzania

It has been 41 years since March 1968, Chinese government began to send medical teams to Tanzania to provide medical services to the people of Tanzania.  It is one of the good exemples of the longlasting brotherhood relations between Tanzania and China.

During the 41 years, 948 Chinese doctors and supportting members in 20 Chinese medical teams have provided medical services in different regions in Tanzania.  Each team stays in Tanzania for 2 years.  At its peak in the early years, number of team members was large with 86 as the largest.  Chinese doctors have been working in 19 regions including Dodoma, Tabora, Musoma, Newala, Mtwara, Lindi, Kigoma, Shinyanga, Mbeya, Morogoro, Singida and Dar es Salaam and some remote villages. With the development of Tanzania healthcare, the scale and the coverage of Chinese medical teams decreased. In August 2009, the 21st Medical team just arrived and will soon start to work in National Hospital Muhimbili, Dodoma, Tabora and Musoma hospitals.  In average, the Chinese doctors receive more than 40,000 out-patients, deal with more than 20,000 various cases from in hospital patients and more than 4,000 emergency patients, make more than 3,000 surgical operations, treat with acupuncture of more than 1,000 patients, made ECG, B-ultra check, laboratory, X-ray examination for more than 10,000 patients.  During the course, Chinese doctors and Tanzania doctors worked closely and learned from each other.  Chinese medical teams have gained trust and praise from local government and the people with their high degree of responsibility and skillful medical expertise.

Besides sending medical teams to Tanzania, China is also willing to cooperates with Tanzania Government on improving  facilities and the capability in medical service, and has committed to build a cardiac surgery center and malaria control center for Tanzania.
