Chinese medical doctors and agricultural experts are expected to arrive in Liberia in September to assist  the west African state augment its health and agricultural sectors, a diplomat from the Chinese embassy in Liberia said on Aug.7 (Sunday).

The diplomat of the embassy's public information section told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that bilateral discussions are being held between the Chinese and Liberian governments to identify specific health service needs of the country.

The health sector is one of many basic social service sectors in the west African country ruined by 14-year-long civil war.

Regarding the agricultural sector, the diplomat said China has agreed in principle to assist Liberia to establish commercial rice farms. Rice is Liberia's staple, but bulk of the nation's rice consumption is imported.

The health and agricultural sectors are two of three "immediate priority areas" the Chinese embassy has planned to assist, said the embassy official.

China and Liberia have already signed a memorandum of understanding for the renovation of the dilapidated 35,000-seat sports stadium in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

China is one of the many countries currently providing manpower and logistical assistance for the 15,000 United Nations peacekeeping troops in the west  African country.
