Seminar For Liberian Trainees in China held by Embassy

2005-01-24

On Jan 18th, 2005, Chinese embassy in Liberia held a seminar for Liberian trainees who had taken courses in China in 2004. Present at the seminar were 14 Liberian vice ministers and assistant ministers, including Liberian Vice Foreign Minister Masalay, about 30 Liberians who'd taken the training courses, Chinese ambassador to Liberia Lin Songtian, Deputy Chief of the Mission He Meng, Commercial Counselor Zhang Yi, other Chinese diplomats in the embassy and several local Liberian media people, altogether counting up to 70. The seminar was held in a friendly and warm atmosphere.

At the seminar, trainees from 14 Liberian ministries, several commissions and programs under the Liberian government and some media exchanged their feelings of the courses in China and then put forward their suggestions and advice on how to further strengthen bilateral and China-Africa cooperation in the field of human resources development. They thanked the Chinese government for these training opportunities and highly appreciated the government's emphasis on China-Africa development in the field of human resources. They said China's experience in its successful reform, opening-up and economic development is worth learning and China is a trustworthy partner of Africa. During the stay in China, they've witnessed with their own eyes China's great achievements in city building as well as providing enough food to 1.3 billion people. They've tasted China's history and culture, felt for themselves harmony in the Chinese society, progress in its judicial system, respect for human rights and people's favorable living standards, which fresh their knowledge and open their vision, prompting them to realize the relative lagging-behind of Africa, especially Liberia. They said they felt it urgent to draw upon China's experience in peaceful development to build for Liberia sustainable development and long-term stability.

All parties at the seminar recognized that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan will finally be united. They appealed to Liberian government to stand firm on "One China" policy while rejecting Taiwan authorities' "Dollar diplomacy" so as to develop in an all-round manner China-Liberia friendly relations and cooperation. China's development fits with the times, thus developing long-term stable and friendly relations with China serves the interests of both Liberia and Liberian people.

Advice was made at the seminar that the Chinese government could offer more training opportunities to Liberia, diversify training methods and host courses in China or in Africa, both multilateral and bilateral training cooperation could be carried out; training of practical technical skills could be added to the curriculum and personnel interaction between the two countries could be strengthened. They also proposed to set up China Cultural Center in Liberia and host Chinese language training courses.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Lin sang highly of the suggestions and also briefed on the bilateral relations in 2004. Lin said after China and Liberia resumed diplomatic relations in Oct 2003, concerted efforts made by the two sides have been prompting by leaps and bounds the bilateral cooperative relations in political, economic and trade, human resources and various other fields, which have yielded fruitful results. Lin stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing with Liberia a new-style partnership featuring long-term stability, equality and mutual benefits and comprehensive cooperation. The Chinese side will, as always, support and participate in the peace process and reconstruction of Liberia. Proposals made at this seminar will be carefully studied. China will act, under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, to improve both China-Africa and China-Liberia cooperation on human resources development and to share with the Liberian side the successful experience of China's development.
