Li Zhaoxing Meets with Liberia's House Speaker-elect
2006/01/20

On January 16, 2006, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Speaker-elect of the Liberian House of Representatives Edwin Snowe in Monrovia.

Li said that the inauguration of Liberia's new President today has opened a new chapter in the Liberian history. The Chinese government and people wish Liberia to maintain peace and stability, and realize prosperity and harmony. It conforms to the fundamental interest of both peoples for the two countries to show mutual political support and assistance for each other and conduct economic mutually beneficial cooperation for common development. China highly appreciates the Liberian government and parliament for adhering to the one-China policy and would like to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Liberia in all areas including legislature. China will continue to resolutely support Liberia's peace process and economic reconstruction.

Snowe noted that the Liberian transitional national parliament issued a resolution on reaffirming abidance by the one-China principle last August. The new Liberian parliament will continue adhering to this resolution and would like to strengthen exchanges with the National People's Congress (NPC) of China to promote the development of bilateral relations.

On the same day, Li, as Special Envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao, also attended the inaugural ceremony of Liberia's new President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
