Chadian President Deby Meets with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing

2007-01-05

On January 4, 2007, Chadian President Idriss Deby met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing at the Presidential Palace. The next day, the foreign minister presided over the opening ceremony for the Chinese embassy in Chad, which Chadian Foreign Minister Ahmad Allam-Mi and other officials attended.

During the meeting, Li appreciated President Deby's decision to resume diplomatic ties with China for the normalization of bilateral relations. The Chinese minister said that bilateral cooperation in economy, education, agriculture and health care has been underway since the ties were resumed. Chinese agriculture experts and medical workers have arrived in Chad for work and anti-malaria drugs will be shipped to the African country soon. Some Chadian students have arrived in China for study and first-phase inspection and preparations for a range of cooperation projects are also underway at a quickened pace. "China is willing to work together with the Chadian side to let our two peoples enjoy the fruits of the resumption of ties as soon as possible," Li said.

President Deby conveyed his best wishes for the New Year to the Chinese people via the visiting minister. He said Chad and China, as two old friends, are to be congratulated for resuming their diplomatic ties. Resuming diplomatic relations was in the fundamental interests of the people of both countries, he said. The signing of a series of cooperation agreements shows the strong aspiration of both sides to strengthen cooperation, Deby said. Chad, which is rich in energy and natural resources, is facing a huge task of infrastructure construction and is willing to cooperate with Chinese enterprises, said the president.

On January 4, Li and Allam-Mi held talks, and both sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral ties and multilateral cooperation and signed related cooperation agreements.
