Nigerian president ends China visit

2005-04-21

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo left Chinese economic hub Shanghai on April 17th, concluding his four-day state visit to China as guest of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

During his stay in Shanghai, Obasanjo met local governmental officials and visited a major foreign trade port.

Obasanjo arrived in Beijing on 14th. He had talks with Hu and met with top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao, while witnessing the signing of some cooperation documents between the two countries. He also visited Hubei Province in central China.

China and Nigeria agreed to establish a strategic partnership within the framework of South-South cooperation and to enhance political and economic cooperation, according to a joint statement issued on Friday.

This is Obasanjo's third visit to China after assuming the presidency in 1999. He came to China this time in the capacity of both Nigerian president and rotating president of the African Union.
