On the morning of July 18, 2005, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with visiting Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, National Security Adviser to Nigerian President at the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The two sides exchanged ideas on China-Nigeria bilateral relations and the issues of common concern. Li said China-Nigeria relationship has developed smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties 34 years ago. The two sides have maintained frequent high-level exchanges of visits, expansion of economic cooperation and trade, and good communication and cooperation in international affairs. China-Nigeria relations have entered a new period of comprehensive and fast development with the joint efforts of both sides. The Chinese side appreciates the adherence to the One-China principle by the Nigerian government and is ready to make joint efforts with the Nigerian side to push the bilateral friendly and cooperative relations to a new level. Gusau said China and Nigeria share a lot of common interests and the two sides should continue to strengthen bilateral friendly relations. The Nigerian side is ready to strengthen its cooperation with China in various fields. At the invitation of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Gusau arrived in Beijing on July 17 to kick off his visit.
