On May 3, 2011, Hussein Tantawi, Egyptian acting head of state and Chairman of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Cairo.
During the meeting, Yang first conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes from President Hu Jintao. He said China attaches importance to maintaining and developing bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation in the new era. China is ready to join hands with Egypt to consolidate the traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, expand humanities exchanges and enhance communication and coordination in international issues so as to strive to push China-Egypt strategic cooperative relations to a new level. As the two economies are highly complementary, China will further enhance trade and investment cooperation with Egypt and encourage more Chinese-funded businesses to invest in the country. China supports Egypt to play a more important role in international and regional affairs and sincerely hopes for stability and development of Egypt and continuous improvement of its people's livelihood.
Tantawi thanked for President Hu's greetings. He said China shares traditional friendship with Egypt and the Chinese people are always good brothers and good friends of Egyptian people. Egypt highly appreciates China's development policies and experience. The two countries have maintained friendly cooperative relations in all areas with political ties developing smoothly and both sides share the same position on many major international and regional issues. Egypt is ready to enhance strategic cooperation with China to promote peace and stability of the region. Under the current circumstances, stronger economic cooperation between both countries is particularly important to Egypt and the two countries have huge potential in their industrial and investment cooperation.
