CHONGWE, Zambia, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The construction of township roads in Zambia's Chongwe district in Lusaka Province by China's AVIC International Engineering Corporation would go ahead as planned, a government official has said.

Japhen Mwakalombe, Member of Parliament of Chongwe constituency made the assurance when he visited one of the wards Wednesday to engage local civic leaders on proposed roads to be considered in the project in that ward.

He was responding to concerns by residents who expressed doubt about the project implementation amid COVID-19.

He said that the Road Development Agency was already in the district to identify and map out the 48 km of the roads to be tarred.

Mwakalombe said the upgrading of the roads to bituminous standards is expected to be completed before the rainy season.

He said the project had delayed but this could not be avoided due to the spread of COVID-19.

He added that he was confident the contractor will undertake the project in the same manner it carried out the other two projects in two other wards of the district last year. He said the quality of works in the projects done last year is admirable.

Kapwayambale ward councillor Chipili Samangwe said the project once completed would change the face of the ward. Enditem
