On June 5, 2019, Ambassador Hua Ning attended the South Sudan World Environment Day (WED) 2019 commemoration. Hon. Lt. Gen. Michael Changjiek Geay, Minister of Interior, Hon. Josephine Napon Cosmas, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hon. Deng Deng Hoc, Minister of General Education and Instruction of South Sudan, and more than 100 representatives from UNEP, UNDP, the Diplomatic Corps, NGOs and business community participated in this event.
Ambassador Hua said that China is the global host of World Environment Day under the theme of "Air Pollution" this year. A series of commemorative events held across China with the main event in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message dedicated to WED, which demonstrates that the Chinese government attaches great importance to environmental protection.
Ambassador Hua introduced China's practice and experience in managing air pollution. China is confident that the country will be victorious in the blue sky protection campaign. China has established a legal system for environmental protection. For the first time, ecological conservation was written into the revised Constitution of China in 2018. China invests a lot of money to control air pollution, vigorously develops clean energy, conducts massive reforestation, significantly reduces backward steel production capacity, conducts strict environmental inspections nationwide, which ensures that the air quality has gradually improved in China. In 2018, China's clean energy consumption stands at 22.2% of the total primary energy consumption, an increment by 7.7% compared to 2012. In 338 cities in China, the density of PM 2.5 particles dropped 9.3%.
Ambassador Hua said that the South Sudanese Government holds World Environment Day with the national theme of "Together we can reduce plastic pollution". China shares the same concern of South Sudanese people and commends the related actions taken by South Sudanese Government. Ambassador stressed that China will work closely with international community to address global environmental challenges such as plastic pollution and air pollution, building a community with a shared future for mankind.
South Sudanese representatives said that South Sudan is committed to strengthening environmental protection, reducing plastic, air, water and land pollution and creating a better environment for future generations. Meanwhile, The country is taking active measures to promote the environmental awareness of the general public, including establishment of students' association for environmental protection in public schools. The Government of South Sudan will join hands with international community to jointly counter climate change and protect the ecological environment.
