ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- China has been supporting many countries and Ethiopia, in particular, in their efforts to enhance public health services, according to Ethiopia's former State Minister of Health Kebede Worku.

Speaking exclusively to Xinhua on Wednesday, Kebede said China has been supporting Ethiopia's health sector through construction of hospitals and donation of equipment as well as provision of technical trainings.

Since the early 1970's, China has also been dispatching medical teams to Ethiopia, who served in different parts of the country.

"The Chinese government has built public hospitals as donation in many countries, including the Tirunesh-Beijing Hospital in the outskirt of Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The hospital for instance is not only providing services to Addis Ababa, but also to neighboring districts, and the nation in general," Kebede said.

Kebede commended China for its continued technical support, through short- and long-term trainings in the sector, which has significantly enhanced health service delivery in the country.

He especially hailed Chinese private investment in Ethiopia's health sector, including the newly opened Addis Ababa Silk Road General Hospital, undertaken by Chinese firm, Afei Holding Co. Ltd.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, and also with a highly specialized physician team of 200 from 16 countries, the hospital was inaugurated on Tuesday.

The hospital will further boost health care delivery in the country, both to Ethiopians and foreign nationals, Kebede said.

"This hospital has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Addis Ababa University and Black Lion Teaching Hospital two years ago; qualified professionals from China and elsewhere who are serving in the hospital will provide technical support, and work closely with Black Lion Hospital and other hospitals.

"Medicine is about experience sharing and working together...so, the partnership will definitely boost knowledge and experience sharing," Kebede said.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the new hospital on Tuesday, Liu Yu, economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese embassy in Ethiopia, said China has been attaching great importance to its partnership with Ethiopia in the public health sector.
