Botswana Backs China

Gaborone — President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has reiterated Botswana's support for the One China Policy which he said was not limited to Taiwan and Hong Kong but extended to Tibet.
"As the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and government in power, we will not do anything to undermine the One China Policy. If anything we will do everything to grow our bilateral relations premised on growing Botswana's interests and reciprocating by sustaining and protecting China's interests," he said.
He told a visiting Communist Party of China (CPC) delegation in Gaborone on April 8 that Botswana would not do anything to compromise Botswana China interests.
Dr Masisi said his state visit to China last year was a commitment underpinned by political collaboration saying he would reciprocate by inviting President Xi Jinping to Botswana.
"We strongly feel that his visit will close the loop for him as he has visited most promising economies in Africa except Botswana," he said.
President Masisi said Botswana was delighted to be part of the Road and Belt Initiative which he said was also underpinned by political collaboration.
He said the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation projects would be fast-tracked and that phase two would be pursued following completion of the first one.
Meanwhile, leader of the CPC delegation and CPC Central Committee member as well as Jilin Province party secretary, Mr Bayin Chaolu, has commended President Masisi for winning the BDP presidential elections held in Kang this past weekend.
Describing CPC as a close friend of the BDP, he said the two parties cherished their long-standing ties and party-to-party relations.
He said China appreciated the support of President Masisi and his stand on the interests of the two parties.
Mr Bayin acknowledged President Masisi's stand on safeguarding the core interests of the two countries and his position on the One China Policy and his stance on Taiwan, South China Sea and Tibet.
"We are also motivated by your commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative as well as the two countries areas of cooperation," he said.
Last year during a state visit to China, President Masisi and some BDP central committee members paid a courtesy call on the CPC central committee member Mr Song Tao.
During the courtesy call, he said BDP and CPC were both committed to respecting the sovereignty of each nation.
