  【Official Name】Islamic Republic of Mauritania

  【Area】1.03 million km²

  【Population】4.3 million (UN, 2016). Arabic is the official language, while French is also commonly used. About 96 of Mauritanians are Muslim.

  【Capital】Nouakchott with a population of 894,000 (2013). The temperatures in September, the hottest month, are from 24 to 34℃ while temperatures in December, the coolest month, are from 13 to 28℃.

  【Head of State】President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (since July 2009). The President was re-elected in June 2014.

  【Holiday】Independence Day (28 November)

  【Geography and Climate】Mauritania is situated in the western Saharan Desert in Africa. It borders Algeria, Mali and Senegal, and has the Atlantic Ocean to the west with a coastline of 667 kilometers. It has a dry tropical climate, characterized by high temperature and sporadic rainfall, with an annual average temperature of 25℃. Mauritania became one of the colonies that constituted French West Africa in 1920 and declared an independent state on November 28, 1960.
