【Area】118,484 km²
【Population】18.09 million (2016). Most of the Malawi people are black Bantu-speaking peoples. The major ethnic groups in Malawi include the Nyanja, the Chewa, and the Yao. The official languages are English and Chichewa. Approximately 82% of the inhabitants are Christians and Catholics, 13% Muslims, while the remainders practice primitive religions.

【Geography and Climate】Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa, bordered by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania, with three-fourths of its territory an elevation of 1,000 to1,500 meters above sea level. Malawi lies in a temperatetropical savanna climate with moderate rainfall, and the annual average temperature is around 20℃. It experiences three seasons: cool and dry from May to August, hot from September to November, and wet from December to April. The highest temperature in the hot season is 29℃, while the lowest in the cool and dry season is 7℃. Annual precipitation averages at 1,000 to 1,500 mm.
